ASEAN countries and Russia agree to enhance defence co-operation

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia have agreed to collaborate in defence and security-related technologies. The move is aimed at expanding ASEAN capability to address strategic threats and consolidate Russia's already strong position in Southeast Asian defence markets.

Following a meeting of the 12th ASEAN-Russian joint co-operation committee (ARJCC) in Indonesia on 30 April, ASEAN said the two sides will undertake projects focused on developing remote sensing and positioning systems.

ASEAN said the partnership would also feature a joint project related to GLONASS, Russia's military-operated satellite navigation system. ASEAN did not elaborate on this plan, although it is understood that it encompasses potential ASEAN participation in the development and installation of ground-based GLONASS stations in the region.
